Properties from the Post World War II
Years Identified as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. It is sometimes difficult for the general public to
realize that historic preservation seeks to preserve all parts of the
community's built environment, even when a certain architectural style has
gone into disfavor. The years from 1945 until 1965 witnessed profound
changes in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Charlotte College, now UNCC, was
established. Interstate 85 opened to traffic. Ownership of
automobiles increased greatly. Suburban developments multiplied.
These changes were reflected in the types of buildings that appeared in the
optimistic post-war era. The most significant from those years still
standing in Charlotte-Mecklenburg are listed below.
