Director’s Report

August 11, 2003

1.  Since the June HLC Meeting, four properties have been designated as historic landmarks. These include Oakley House, Calvin Neal, Bryant Park, and Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery.

2.  Staff continues to work on the final determination of boundaries for the Washam Farm. As soon as that process is completed, the HLC will move forward with processing the property for prospective designation by the Huntersville Town Board.

3.  The owner of Cedar Grove Plantation is requesting that the amount of land included in the designation be reduced. This matter will have to come before the HLC for action.

4.  Survey and Research Reports will be completed by September 1st on the following properties. They are: Arthur Grier House, Martin’s Grocery, Little House. Progress is being made on the Lassiter House Survey and Research Report.

5.  The HLC has received an appraisal on the W. T. Alexander Plantation. Negotiations continue with the prospective buyer and with the adjacent property owner concerning an access easement.

6.  Conversations with Russ Crider, Associate County Manager, and Tom Cox, BOCC Chairman, were most informative and productive. The Commission will be asked this fall, as will all other County agencies, to make a presentation (approximately 30 minutes) explaining the value of its endeavors.

7.  The Auxiliary Pavilion at Rural Hill Plantation is completed. Plans are underway to have a formal dedication.

8.  Stewart Gray and I have begun the Survey of Center City Charlotte. You can view the results on the website – go to Survey Committee and you will see the hyperlink. Stewart and I would welcome your comments. We hope to have the Survey completed by January 1, 2004.

9.  The County Public Service and Information Department will be meeting with the Education Committee to discuss placing the HLC’s website homepage on the County server.
