Director's Report

January 10, 2000

1. I have met with Marilyn Croteau, and I have put her to work on several projects. These include obtaining estimates for moving the McAuley House, obtaining the sign for 2100 Randolph Road, and photographing the Croft Schoolhouse, which has been approved by the National Park Service for Federal and, therefore, State Tax Credits.

2. Emily Ramsey has met with me and has begun work on the Survey and Research Reports on the Neely Slave Cemetery and the John Milton Alexander House.

3. David E. Gall, A.I.A. has completed the planning phase for the post-World War Two Survey. They have asked that I have students in my Graduate Historic Preservation Class at UNCC assist them with research for Phase Two of the project.

4. I am working with Patricia Nystrom to finalize the agreement with Cambridge Properties for purchase of the W. T. Alexander Plantation. I will be submitting the necessary materials related to purchase to the Planning Commission and the Board of County Commissioners in the very near future.

5. The completion of the Croft Schoolhouse is almost accomplished. Sandy Roper has signed the listing agreement and is seeking a tenant for the building.

6. I have met with Catherine Browning, our Buyer's agent. She is gathering information on the Commission's prospective purchase of the Grier-Furr House in Matthews. She is also pursuing other opportunities.

7. The County will initiate the process of advertising for the Project Manager, part of whose time will be devoted to the HLC, in the next few weeks. The HLC will participate in the interviewing process.

8. Dr. Thomas McCoy has approached the County about the County's purchasing a large tract of land in northern Mecklenburg County, which would include the McCoy Slave Cemetery. Parks Helms suggested that I write a letter to him encouraging that the County give serious consideration to this issue.

9. There are interesting developments with respect to the Charlotte Cotton Mills. Barry Miller and I met with developers who might approach the HLC about participating in a preservation project at the site. More about this later.

10. Charlotte Trolley, Inc. informs me that the transfer of title to Streetcar No. One to them will occur sometime in March.

11. I have not heard from Ray Killian with respect to his assessment of development potential at the Rev. Miller House (the Home Place).

12. I will be meeting with Pike Jones, a developer, about a preservation strategy for the Oehler House on the Huntersville-Concord Road.

13.  Lee-Morgan, Inc. is developing estimates for repairs at the Newell Rosenwald School and for upfit of the Thomas Gluyas House.

Respectfully submitted,
