Director's Report

November 13, 2000

A.  Action Items.

1.  Lara Ramsey is currently assisting with the processing of properties for historic landmark designation and other routine administrative matters.  Her performance has been outstanding.  I am requesting that her hourly consultant fee be increased from $10 to $12 per hour -- the fee currently paid to Marilyn Croteau.  A line item in the Commission's budget is available for this expense.  Click here for resume.

B.  Information Items.

1.  Charlotte Trolley should be completing the restoration of Trolley No. One in the very near future.  The Commission has already agreed to transfer title to Charlotte Trolley when the restoration is finished.  Some sort of a ceremony will be scheduled.

2.  The Commission will close on Building B of the Charlotte Cotton Mills on November 13th.  Bryan Turner will be the Project Manager.  Thanks to each of you (Bradsher, Bos, Autrey, Parker, Misenheimer, Richardson, Felder, Ritch, Turner, Morrill, Nystrom) who attended last Thursday's special meeting to discuss outstanding issues concerning the closing.

3.  The Architecture Ranking Committee (Autrey, Bradsher, Parker, Morrill, Turner, Hahn) for the W. T. Alexander House met on November 8th and will be making a recommendation to the Historic Landmarks Commission.

4.  The Joint Public Hearing with City Council to consider the designation of the Neely Slave Cemetery and the Thies House will occur in December.  You will be informed of the time and date when that information becomes available.

 5.  We hope to establish soon the date for the joint public hearing with the Town of Huntersville to consider the designation of the John Milton Alexander House as a historic landmark.  Please note that Anne Hammond has resigned as town planner in Huntersville.  She will be taking a job in Nashville, Tenn.

6.  The consultants have begun the 20th Century Industrial and Institution Survey.

7.  I have talked with the architects who will be designing the improvements to Eastover School.  I am convinced that the changes will be sensitive to the historic character of the building.

8.  I did meet with the individual who wanted to see the public records on the Commission's negotiations regarding the Oehler property.  There is a good possibility that Land Bank Bonds will be used to purchase the property.

9.  The Historic Marker for the Alexander Slave Cemetery has arrived.  Marilyn Croteau and Bryan Turner will be coordinating its installation.  Marilyn Croteau will be working with John Misenheimer to arrange a public ceremony for its unveiling.

10.  I have spent considerable time during the past month negotiating the possible preservation of the Grier House and the Rozzelle House.

11.  Wanda Towler has announced her resignation as Assistant County Manger.  She has been a good friend of the Historic Landmarks Commission over the years.

12.  Meetings will be held with Daniel Levine to consider preservation strategies for the Thomas Griffith Warehouse Building.  There was an article in the Charlotte Observer on November 12th about the HLC's efforts.  Click to read article.

13.  Charlotte City Council did vote this month to designate the Textile Mill Supply Company and the Nebel Knitting Mill Annex as historic landmarks.  Commissioners present included Bradsher, Hirsch, Autrey, Cox, Felder, Bos, Misenheimer

Respectfully submitted,

Dr. Dan L. Morrill, Consulting Director
