Director's Report
April 10, 2006
A. Action Items.
1. The Alumni
Association of the former Plato Price School, an African American High
School that once stood near Douglas International Airport, is requesting
that the Historic Landmarks Commission contribute up to $1000 to assist
with the placement of a highway historic marker at the site of the
former school. The sign will cost in excess of $2000. There
is precedent for the HLC's placing markers in the community, such as the
one near the W. T. Alexander Slave Cemetery.

There are funds in the
HLC's operational budget to make this contribution, which HLC Staff
believes would increase public awareness of the heritage of Mecklenburg
County. Staff therefore requests a motion approving the HLC's
contributing up to $1000 for the marker with the understanding that HLC
staff will work with the Alumni Association and approve the wording on
the marker.
B. Information
Items.
1. Jason Nichols, a
student intern, continues to identify the contents of the N. S.
Alexander House. When he completes that task, staff will sit down with
the Alexander family to determine what items the family wants to retain.
2. A Joint Public
Hearing to consider the change of boundaries for the Neel House will
occur with the Charlotte City Council on April 17th. Staff will
provide an approximate time when it becomes available.
3. Jennifer Payne
continues to work with the Town of Davidson on its comprehensive
preservation plan. Reports on several prospective historic
landmarks in Davidson will be brought to the Survey Committee at its May
meeting.
4. Expect to go to
the Town of Huntersville in May for two joint public hearings -- McAuley
Road Farmland and the Bradford Store.
5. Two joint public
hearings with the Charlotte City Council will occur in June -- the
Siloam School and the Dilworth City House.
6. The Nominating
Committee will present a slate of officers to the HLC at its May
Meeting. Elections will occur in June.
7. The County Staff
is working on a proposed operational budget for the Historic Landmarks
Commission. Work is still underway. This budget will be brought before the HLC for its
consideration at the May meeting.
Respectfully submitted
