1. Sherry Joines Wyatt is about to complete the
Industrial and Institutional Survey, which is being funded in part by a
Federal grant. I will place the findings on the website when the survey
has been finished.
2. Paula Stathakis and Stewart Gray will be the
Principal Investigators for the upcoming Survey of African-American
resources. The Division of Archives and History has approved them for this
important undertaking. The office for the survey will be located at the W.
T. Alexander Plantation House.
3. The City Council and the Historic Landmarks
Commission will hold a joint public hearing on October 17th in
the meeting that begins at 6 p.m. Two properties will be considered for
historic landmark designation – an expansion of the W. T. Alexander
Plantation and the Electric Supply and Equipment Company Building.
4. Paula Stathakis has begun her work as the
Editor of the Hornet’s Nest, the Commission’s Internet Journal. She has
established her office at the W. T. Alexander Plantation House.
5. Dr. Vernon Herron of Comprehensive
Genealogical Services has met with staff to review the procedures his
organization will be following in conducting a survey of cemeteries which
contain the remains of enslaved people. Paula Stathakis and Stewart Gray
will be maintaining contact with Dr. Herron.
6. The Commission has closed on the Rozzell
House. Bryan Turner is negotiating a contact with architect Donny Luke to
prepare plans for the restoration of the house and an overall site plan.
7. Architect Joseph Opperman is preparing plans
for the Oehler House and the McAuley House. The McAuley House should be
moved to its new site in the near future.
8. The owners of the Grier House have submitted a
new proposal for selling the property to the Historic Landmarks
Commission. John Parker, Chairman of the Projects Committee, has received
this information.
9. A decision should be forthcoming in the near
future about the attitude of the Coliseum Authority with respect to the
designation of the Charlotte Coliseum (Former) as a historic landmark.
10. I have contacted Mallard Creek Presbyterian
Church will be visiting their session later in the month to discuss the
prospective designation of the Mallard Creek Schoolhouse as a historic
landmark.
11. The Town Board of Huntersville held a joint public
hearing on September 17, 2001, to consider the Commission’s recommendation
regarding the prospective removal of the designation of a portion of the
land at Cedar Grove Plantation. The decision should be forthcoming in the
near future.
12. The Finance Committee will be meeting in
November to consider the HLC’s Operating Budget request for FY 2002.
Committee Chairman should have their programmatic requests (do not deal
with the money) into the HLC’s office no later than November 21st.
The Finance Committee will submit its recommended budget to the HLC at its
meeting on December 10th.
