Director's Report

August 13, 2007

1.  The Historic Preservation Commission of Lincoln County will be hosting a preservation workshop in January 2008.  It will be imperative that at least two Commissioners attend this workshop, so the Commission can meet its Certified Local Government continuing education requirements. The Commission can reimburse expenses.  Staff will be attending the workshop and will be assisting with arrangements.  Our Commission has been asked to reciprocate by sponsoring a workshop in 2009.  Staff supports the Commission's responding affirmatively to this request.

2,  Lisa Gray, Director of Charlotte Trolley, has informed Staff that discussions about the future use of Trolley No. 1 are in order.  The Commission transferred ownership of the trolley to Charlotte Trolley with the stipulation that ownership of the car would revert to the Commission if the car were not placed in regular transportation service.  That prospect now seems most unlikely.  Therefore, the Commission and Charlotte Trolley need to discuss possibilities.  Ms. Gray will also update the Commission on the status of Streetcar 85 and explain the impact of an educational program, "History On Call," which Charlotte Trolley conducted.

3.  The Town Board of Pineville has approved the new interlocal agreement with the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.  The agreement will now be circulated among the outlying towns of Mecklenburg County.

4.  The designation program is moving ahead in Pineville.  The designation of commercial buildings on the north side of Main Street and additional properties on the south side of Main Street will come before the Town Board of Pineville in a joint public hearing on October 9th at 6:30pm.  This will be the day after the October meeting of the Historic Landmarks Commission.

5.  There have been significant developments with respect to the Coffee Cup Soda Grill.  The present tenants will be vacating the structure, and discussions between the owner and the tenant have included the possibility of creating an exhibit at the African American Cultural Center celebrating the Coffee Cup.  Staff will be meeting with the owner on Wednesday to discuss future plans for the Coffee Cup Soda Grill.

6.  Staff will be working to complete the annual report for the Certified Local Government Program.

7.  The closing occurred on the final portions of the Charlotte Cotton Mills.  Congratulations to everybody, including Pat Nystrom and Bryan Turner, for bringing this substantial project to a successful conclusion.

8.  Staff has received expressions of concern about the physical condition of the Overcarsh House in Fourth Ward.  It appears that the present owner is not adequately maintaining this property.  Staff is investigating this matter.

9.  Special thanks to Len Norman for his donation of the book, Of Pleasures & Power.  The Story Of The Charlotte City Club, by Jack Claiborne to the Commission's library.

Respectfully submitted,

Dan L. Morrill
