AGENDA
1. Welcome: Valerie Lewis
Ms. Lewis welcomed everyone to the meeting.
2. Director’s Report: Dan
Morrill
Dr. Morrill asked that the
Committee consider a Student Internship . He said that the Survey
Committee wishes to sponsor a comprehensive inventory of the
historic resources in Pineville, N. C. The purpose will be to
determine what properties are eligible for historic designation,
both local and Federal. He said that the Town of Pineville has
agreed to enter into a contract with the Commission whereby the Town
will pay $2000 for a student intern ($1500 stipend and $500
expenses) to conduct the inventory. Dr. Morrill said that he will
serve as the academic advisor of the intern. His name is Paul
Archambault, a student in the public history track in the UNCC M.A.
program. He will devote 450 hours to the project during the summer.
The HLC will provide him with use of a computer and the copy
machine.
MR. MISENHEIMER PRESENTED A
MOTION SECONDED BY MS. HEFNER TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS
COMMISSION THAT THE HLC ENTER INTO A CONTRACT WITH THE TOWN OF
PINEVILLE TO SPONSOR A COMPREHENSIVE INVENTORY OF THE HISTORIC
RESOURCES IN PINEVILLE, N. C., TO DETERMINE WHAT PROPERTIES ARE
ELIGIBLE FOR HISTORIC DESIGNATION, BOTH LOCAL AND FEDERAL ; THE TOWN
WILL PAY $1500 FOR THE STIPEND AND $500 FOR EXPENSES FOR 450 HOURS
OF WORK, AND THE HLC WILL PROVIDE A COMPUTER, USE OF THE COPY
MACHINE, AND SUPERVISION OF THE INTERN BY DR. MORRILL. THE COMMITTEE
UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.
Dr. Morrill showed the
Committee different sections of the HLC’s website - www.cmhpf.org -
such as the restoration of Streetcar #85, the Lloyd Presbyterian
Church Cemetery report, etc. Dr. Morrill is the webmaster of the
site which is heavily used by the community.
3. Historic Charlotte Mural: Ms. Shouse
Ms. Shouse said that the
Airport would like to install the Historic Charlotte Mural behind
the ticket counter at the airport. Everyone was delighted to hear
this news. The mural was painted by Kenneth Whitsett and is
currently rolled up and is on the floor in the living room at 2100
Randolph Road. Once the Mural has been installed, a special ceremony
will be held. The event should occur no later than the end of
October. Ms. Shouse said that special arrangements will be made for
proper installation of the valuable mural which was once located at
Harding High School and was brought to the HLC by Mr. Sullivan.
4. Davidson Schoolhouse at Rural Hill Update:

Mr. Misenheimer reported
that over 12,000 people attended the Rural Hill Highland Games event
last weekend. Ms. Hefner said that third graders recently visited
the site. She said that Historic Charlotte is coordinating with the
Catawba Valley Scottish Society and the County regarding an
Educational program and transportation for the school children.
5. Old Business
No old business was presented.
6. New Business
Ms. Hefner invited everyone to attend
Historic Charlotte’s event this coming Thursday in honor of Historic
Preservation Week.
Ms. Blackburn said that Bike Charlotte is
hosting the yearly bicycle events next week and will tour historic
areas in Charlotte on May 8.
