Education Committee Meeting

August 29, 2002

Ms. Richardson called the meeting to order and thanked all the members who were present. She stated that she believed the Committee should identify specific objectives for the upcoming year. She asked each member of the Committee to consider what projects he or she would like to lead.

Ms. Richardson stated that she has asked Cameron Blake Holtz to join the Education Committee, and Dr. Morrill was asked to approach Dr. Tom Hanchett about becoming a member.

Ms. Richardson stated that she would assume responsibility for overseeing an unveiling ceremony for the Good Samaritan Hospital historic marker.

Ms. Richardson reported that Historic Charlotte would be holding its annual fundraiser at the Charlotte Cotton Mills. Ms. Boss stated that she would approach Cameron Blake Holtz, Director of the Historic Charlotte, about how the Commission might highlight the restoration of the Charlotte Cotton Mills.

Michael Sullivan agreed that he would oversee the coordination of making public officials more aware of the accomplishments and procedures of the Commission.

Ms. Richardson suggested that Black History Month would be an excellent time to highlight the African American Survey.

Ms. Richardson suggested it might be helpful for the Committee to identify other community organizations and events that the Commission can become part of.

There was a general discussion of how the Commission might highlight the Davidson Schoolhouse at Rural Hill. John Misenheimer and Bruce Schulman stated that they would consider how best to coordinate a public event with the calendar of the public schools.

Ms. Richardson stated that she would approach Paul Fomberg of the North Carolina Division of Archives and History about his participating in a Course explaining Historic Preservation Investment Tax Credits to real estate agents, lawyers, and other professionals.

Ms. Richardson announced that the next meeting of the Education Committee would be on September 17th at 5:30PM.
