Historic Landmarks Commission News -- Winter 2002

The Commission is making a major effort to assist the vintage historic trolley project, which it began.  First, it joined with other groups in seeking City Council's approval for building the trolley line through the Convention Center.  City Council did give its approval on February 25th. Second, it is seeking money to acquire and restore the historic streetcar barn in South End.
The Commission has received a Federal grant to survey historic African sites in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.  The Commission has already identified several properties, including the Newell Rosenwald School.
The Commission had secured a lot on Rea Road to which the Grier-Rea House and had received permission from the County Commission to move and restore the house.  However, the house will almost certainly be demolished because City Council did not approve rezoning of the property.  Click here for historic photo of house.
The Commission will be acquiring the Palmer Fire School on East 7th St.  We will be seeking a buyer who will preserve the property as an adaptive reuse.  The Commission will issue a call for proposals in the near future.
