Guthery Apartments. UTM: 17
514746E 3898372N Erected in the 1920s and
substantially damaged by fire in the late 1930s, the Guthery Apartments
is the sole surviving example on Tryon St. of an early twentieth century
apartment building. Structures of this type were once common on
this major thoroughfare, but they increasingly gave way to commercial
and office buildings as the process of suburbanization intensified by
mid-century. Stylistically, the building is Classical Revival,
thereby reflective of the conservative architectural tastes that were
predominant during that decade. |
