Harding High
School. UTM: 17
513613E 3899164N Two original
sections of Charlotte Harding High School remain, the auditorium and the
cafeteria. Erected in the 1920s, the structure served white
students from Charlotte's west side. Much of the historic
significance of the site is due to events that occurred there on the
morning of September 4, 1957. Dorothy Counts, the first African
American student to enroll in the school, was greeted by crowds of
jeering students. This event drew media attention from thoughout
the United States and embarrassed the local leadership.
Thereafter, Charlotte was determined to make a "civil adjustment" to
racial integration of the public schools. |
