The Alpha Cotton Mills Village. UTM:  17 515442E 3898382N The D. A. Tompkins Co. built the Alpha Cotton Mills for local investors in 1888-89.  Tompkins also erected the mill village on the hill to the immediate east of the plant.  A small cluster of  three-room gable-roofed houses survives.  They are the only mill houses remaining in Center City Charlotte.   They bear dramatic testimony to the emergence of Charlotte as a major cotton mill center in the late nineteen and early twentieth centuries.
