St. Peter's Episcopal
Church. UTM: 17
514528E 3898275N
This Gothic Revival style
church was completed in 1893 to replace an earlier sanctuary that sat on
the same site. It is one of only three active Christian
congregations still worshiping in buildings on Tryon St., the others
being First United Methodist Church and St. Peters Roman Catholic
Church. Typically, houses of worships stood on the major
thoroughfares of crossroads towns. Once surrounded by homes and
apartments, St. Peters Episcopal Church now sits amidst high rise
buildings and other commerce-related structures. Jane Smedberg Renwick
Wilkes was a members of St. Peters Episcopal. It is the second
oldest building on Tryon St. |
